Many parents do not want to deal with the hassle of explaining a dental appointment with their child because they feel that it is something that the child is going to have to do regardless of how comfortable he or she is with the situation. If you want your child to have a good experience with his or her dentist, it is important to walk them through the events that will take place.
Explain to your child what a dentist is and what they do. Many children think that all they do is drill and pull out people’s teeth with pliers. As adults, everyone knows that is not the situation; however, the only interpretation children have seen of the dental field is the things they see on television.
Most shows do not show how well a dental visit can go. They show horror stories that are blown out of proportion and make many children terrified. If you take the time to let them know what really goes on in the office, he or she may be able to relax when the day comes.
If your child still feels a bit uncomfortable with the situation, you may ask the pediatric dentist if he or she would be willing to explain things to your child. They may take the time to show off all of the equipment and even explain step-by-step what happens throughout the appointment. Once a child knows what is supposed to happen during the exam, he or she will calm down and allow the dental appointment to start.
